Prof. Szewach Weiss: the Order of the White Eagle is the summary of my work
Last year, the former ambassador of Israel in Poland, Professor Szewach Weiss, was honoured with the Order of the White Eagle by President Andrzej Duda. It is Poland's highest state decoration. In a special broadcast of Polish Radio 24 – #SprawiedliwaWśródNarodów – we remind the conversation that we had with Professor Weiss in January 2017 on our radio.

Professor Szewach Weiss was born in 1935 in Borysław – it was a Polish town then. In 2001-2003 he was the ambassador of Israel in Poland, as well as the Speaker of the Knesset (1992-1996).
As Szewach Weiss admitted on Polish Radio 24, he was aware of the fact that the work for Israeli-Polish relations is a mission for a man who was born in Poland and was a victim of the fascist occupation. “If someone survived, and I was lucky enough to survive with the help of the Righteous among the Nations, it is worth using such an experience, together with others, to heal these wounds” – he stressed. “The Righteous among the Nations helped Jews even when they risked being killed. During World War II, Poles were second-class people for Germans, while Jews were not even regarded as people. It was our common tragedy (...)” – said the former ambassador of Israel in Poland.
During Holocaust, 6 million of Jewish people were killed, Polish Jews among them. The people who rescued Jews from the extermination by Nazi Germany, were later awarded with the Righteous among the Nations title by Israel. Poles are the most numerous group honoured for rescuing Jewish lives – over 6,500 Poles were honoured with the title.
